How to Construct URLs That Will Get You More Traffic

    Date: 2023-04-23

    Summary

In this conversation, Joe explains how a web page is constructed, beginning with the URL. The URL is like a street address for websites, helping browsers find the exact location of the information being requested. The components of a URL include the secure website connection (HTTPS), which is a secure protocol that encrypts data between a user's browser and a website, the domain (the main name of the website), and the keyword (a word or phrase within the website's address that tells you what the website is about). The page of the website refers to a specific section of the website, like a chapter in a book. HTTPS is seen as a sign of trust and security, which is important to users, and Google has stated that it is a ranking factor.

This conversation is about how to construct a URL for a specific page on a website. The example used is a page about basketball on the website 'example.com'. Joer explains that the website's page builder will automatically generate the URL, and then goes over to the editor to show how they set up the URL. This involves changing the page URL to the keyword 'bikes' and saving the changes. Joe then explains that when the page is published, it will be easy for people to understand what they are doing and easier for Google to understand what this page is about. The URL will be in the format of 'mydomain/bikes'.

[0:00:00]  Joe: Before we build our web page, we need to understand how a web page is constructed. Need to break down the Anatomy of a web Page the first part of your web page is your URL. The URL is this text up in the browser bar that people type in to access your website. The URL is like a street address for websites or a page on the Internet. It helps your website browser find the exact location of the information you're looking for. Just like how a street address helps you find a friend's house.

[0:00:40]  Joe: There are several components of a URL. The first section you see here is the secure website connection. It represents Https, which is a secure protocol that encrypts data between a user's browser and a website. This helps to protect your privacy and security. Google has stated that the Https is a ranking factor, meaning that websites that use Https may rank higher in search results than websites that do not.

[0:01:11]  Joe: This is because Https is seen as a sign of trust and security, which is important to users. Now every website built with the dream website builder automatically encrypts and uses Https. When you use sites like WordPress and some other site builders, you actually have to pay for a secondary service to provide the secure layer. The next section is the domain. This is your website's main name. A domain is the main part of a website's address, like the name of your street.

[0:01:45]  Joe: It's the easy to remember part that helps people find a website like Google.com or Youtube.com. Instead of having to remember a long list of numbers, this next area is the keyword. This acts as the page's hint. A keyword in a domain is a word or phrase within the website's address that tells you what the website is about. Just like a book title, it hints at the story inside. For example, in example cutekittens, the keyword is cutekittens.

[0:02:23]  Joe: The keyword cutekittens tells you that the page is about adorable kittens. On example.com website the next section is the page of your website. This refers to a specific section of your website. A page in the URL is a part of the website's address that shows which specific section or topic or page you're looking at, like a chapter in a book. For instance, an example sports basketball. Basketball is the page that tells you that you're checking out the basketball section of example.

[0:03:02]  Joe: Com's website your page builder will automatically put the URL together for you if you know where to put the right information. Let's go over here and look at our editor and find out how we construct a URL. First off, your main domain in Https will be handled by the web builder. So the next section we need to take care of is that specific page section. And in that page section we need to make sure we have a keyword.

[0:03:40]  Joe: So I am on a demo page about bikes. So let's look at how we set up this URL. What we're going to do is we're going to come over here to Page. We're going to come over here to demo, and we're going to click on the icon that'll open a menu. We go down here to page URL. So here we can see in this top area where it says Page URL, we can see layout test that's because when I built this page, it had a different name.

[0:04:12]  Joe: And we don't want that name anymore. We want the actual URL. So in here, we will delete this and we will type bikes, save and Close. So now when we publish this page, it'll be my domain slash bikes. And it'll be easy for people to understand what they're doing. It'll also make it easier for Google to understand what this page is about.

URL: "Internet Street Address"

What is a URL?

A URL, or Uniform Resource Locator, is the address of a website or web page on the internet. It is like the address of a house or building. When you type a URL into your web browser, it takes you to that specific website or web page.

Why are URLs important for businesses?

There are many reasons why URLs are important for businesses. Here are a few:

  • URLs help people find your website. When someone types a URL into their web browser, they are telling the browser to go to that specific website. If you have a well-designed URL, it will be easy for people to remember and type in. This can help improve your website's traffic and visibility.
  • URLs help search engines find your website. Search engines use URLs to index websites. When a search engine finds a website with a well-designed URL, it is more likely to show that website in its search results. This can help improve your website's search engine ranking, which can lead to more traffic and leads.
  • URLs can help you build brand awareness. If you use a consistent URL format for all of your website's pages, it will help people remember your brand. This can be helpful for businesses that want to build a strong online presence.

How to design effective URLs

There are a few things you can do to design effective URLs for your business:

  • Use keywords that are relevant to your website's content. This will help people find your website when they are searching for information related to your business.
  • Keep your URLs short and easy to remember. People are more likely to remember a short and easy-to-remember URL than a long and complicated one.
  • Use hyphens instead of underscores to separate words in your URLs. This makes your URLs easier to read and remember.
  • Avoid using special characters or symbols in your URLs. Special characters and symbols can make your URLs difficult to read and remember.
  • Make sure your URLs are consistent across your website. This will help people remember your website's URLs and make it easier for them to find the information they are looking for.

By following these tips, you can design effective URLs that will help your business succeed online.

The workshops will be taught in partnership with the Kingsport and Johnson City chambers of commerce. Amplify Our City is a three-step workshop to attract more customers online and in store. The Redding Record Searchlight recently ran a piece about a young Redding Workforce finding avenues to good jobs. This piece is on the forms of non-college education people engage in to find the technically skilled jobs that make up today’s economy. Cloud Wise Academy, and Chris Webber, a graduate of our school, were both featured in the article. The Local organizations Several local organizations were showcased in the piece, all trying to make a difference for young people entering the job market. For instance, the Shasta Union Fire Academy, which teaches high school students the skills and procedures they need to become fully-qualified firefighters. About 80 percent of graduates of this program receive job offers from state and federal firefighting agencies. One firefighter, Alex Golden, expressed his deep appreciation for the training, saying “I would have been lost without the academy.” Golden has received a job offer from a local fire station. The article also mentioned the Career Technical Education Pathways program, which helps students gain first-hand experience in many different professions, Reach Higher Shasta, Shasta College, and Cloud Wise Academy. Cloud Wise Academy in the News The article discusses how Chris Webber, a navy veteran, was having trouble finding good-paying work after leaving the military. An injury sustained in the navy forced him to abandon gunsmithing after it provided too physically taxing. Around that time, he was contacted by Joe Mckenna from Cloud Wise Academy, who wanted him to take the very first coding class. About a year later, Chris Webber supports his two daughters with his own web-building business. He describes the process of learning to code as much simpler than he thought it would be, and a skill that’s very much in demand. “There’s so much coding work to do, and not enough people to do it,” he says.
